Ke$ha's come a long way in a short time

If there's one thing Ke$ha does well, it's tell stories.
Whether it's via telephone interview, through her albums or on stage, she has no secrets. One thing that may surprise some of the rising star's fans, though, is that she's not all about the party.
Well, mostly she's about the party - just not all the time.
For Ke$ha, success is about how willing one is to take a risk. For her, it's paid off big time.
When Ke$ha was young, her family depended on welfare checks and government aid. Her mom once told her that if she really wanted anything in life, "that I should take it."
She explained, "Basically, it's up to me to make everything happen for myself. I could have gone to a prestigious school. I'm smart. That was easy. I wanted to make music. I realized I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't."
So she dropped out of high school and moved to California.
It wasn't the obvious path to success, but it was what she chose - and she couldn't be happier about it.
"I have no regrets," she said. "I loved school, I was in AP (advanced placement) classes, I studied music and history and religion, I traveled to Cuba and New York for studies."
Within weeks, she went from top student to homeless starlet wannabe, sleeping in her car and stealing canned vegetables for sustenance.
"I lived in my car for a little bit," she admitted nonchalantly. "I stole. I'm not proud of it, but it never occurred to me that I could
possibly fail at music. I knew that if I tried hard enough I'd make it."
A string of sold-out headlining tour dates seems to prove her theory.
"My shows aren't as perfect as other pop artists' shows," she admitted. "I leave it open to do what I like. It's covered in glitter and a little bit chaotic."
They're not perfect, but they are definitely popular. She's sold out many of the venues on this tour, including Tulsa. Originally scheduled at Cain's Ballroom, it sold out in hours. When her April 25 concert was moved to the larger Brady Theater, it sold out again.
Ke$ha performs cover versions of her favorite songs, too, from Madonna to Iggy Pop, and no two nights on tour are exactly the same, she said.
So, about one year after the No. 1 debut of her first album, "Animal," sales are more than 2 million copies worldwide. She is nominated for two American Music Awards. Her single, "We R Who We R," raced to No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart. She has sold 14 million combined tracks and ringtones in the United States.
With all the sudden success, Ke$ha hasn't forgotten her roots - or her family, she said. The first thing she bought when she cashed her first big check?
"I told my mom she could have any car she wanted," said Ke$ha. Her mom chose a ... minivan.
"It's just a big minivan filled full with dogs and kids. That's how my mom rolls," she said with a laugh.
