Ashlee Simpson-Wentz Files for Divorce

The 2½-year marriage of Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Pete Wentz is over, Ashlee's rep confirms to PEOPLE.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," the couple said through a spokesperson. "We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our No. 1 priority. We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives."

According to TMZ, the divorce documents were filed in L.A. Superior Court, with Simpson, 26, citing "irreconcilable differences" and seeking spousal support.

In the court papers, which were signed by Simpson-Wentz on Monday and filed on Tuesday, it says the couple's date of separation is to be determined. Simpson-Wentz is seeking primary physical custody of their 2-year-old son, Bronx, with visitation for Wentz. She is also seeking to go back to her maiden name of Simpson and drop "Wentz."

Simpson, a singer-actress and the younger sister of Jessica Simpson, and Wentz, the former Fall Out Boy bassist, 31, married in May 2008, and by that November welcomed their child, Bronx Mowgli Wentz.

The couple had been linked since the fall of 2006, when they were spotted kissing at a New York nightclub. They announced their engagement in April 2008, and their wedding was officiated by Simpson's father, Joe Simpson.

Only last week, Wentz was sharing his and Ashlee's Super Bowl recipes with PEOPLE.

Don't expect a bitter fallout between Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, who filed for divorce Tuesday after 2½ years of marriage.

"It's very amicable. They're on very friendly terms and speaking – it's fine," a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE. "They've just grown apart. They've been growing apart for quite some time."

"It's all about [their 2-year-old son] Bronx for them. They're fantastic parents – Pete says she's a great mom, and she says he's a great father," says the source. "It's about Bronx's care and well-being and happiness for them."

There was no third party involved in the split, and Simpson-Wentz, 26, and Wentz, 31 – who has been touring with his new band Black Cards – continue to sort through their emotions, according to the source.

"They're both really sad. It's a sad ending to something that was really promising," says the source. "They're each trying to figure out what this transition is going to be like."

According to People, sources close to Simpson and Wentz have said the pop star and Fall Out Boy rocker aren't mixing any emotional theatrics into their impending divorce. One person connected to the situation said the pair are riding out the breakup peacefully.

While insiders have maintained the split is drama-free, TMZ reports that Simpson left due to Wentz's antics. "It's really all about Pete's erratic behavior," the source said. "She really wanted out."

Publicly, the couple have been big on e-affection, gushing about each other on Twitter as recently as two days ago. "Dont forget 2 notice-when i look into the lil dudes eyes & smile, the way he loves. i realize @ashsimpsonwentz is a good moma + so much more," Wentz tweeted Monday.

Just last month Simpson doled out a sweet missive to her husband. "@petewentz I already miss your handsome face!" she wrote on January 19.

Ashlee & Pete's Divorce - A Long Time Coming?

We're still kind of shocked about the news that Ashlee Simpson has filed for a divorce from her hubby Pete Wentz, mainly because we still haven't gotten a real reason why she's doing it. From what we could tell, they were so happy - a blissful lil' family. However, sources are reporting that Ashlee's wanted out of this marriage for a very long time and even though Pete is literally begging her to stay with him, she's had enough.

According to sources close to the couple, Ashlee has been "extremely unhappy for a long time," living behind the lie that their family was stable. Again, we're hearing that her unhappiness with the marriage stemmed from Pete's "erratic behavior," but again, we've gotten no explanation as to what that means.

We do know that while Ashlee suffered silently, Pete was never happier and had no clue that his marriage wasn't perfect. When Ashlee announced she wanted out, he reportedly begged her to change her mind. In fact, he's supposedly still pleading with her to stay, as one source claims he has been "crying" to Ashlee, insisting they can make their relationship work.

But it seems hysterics won't do him any good. Ashlee allegedly won't budge and has every intention of going through with the divorce.

First item on Ashlee Simpson's post-divorce checklist: find a new pad.

A source tells UsMagazine.com the singer-actress, 26, has been crashing at her parents' place since she filed for divorce from Pete Wentz February 9 (the Fall Out Boy rocker, 31, has been staying at their $4.5 million Beverly Hills home) and on Wednesday she seemed determined to change that.

Simpson spent the morning house-hunting with a real estate broker in the Beverly Hills area, a second insider says.

"They drove by a few houses in the $3 to 4 million range," the source tells Us. "Ashlee didn't get out of the car and was quiet and subdued. At one point, she was going to get out of the car but when she saw photographers she decided to stay in the car and then went home."

One criteria for Simpson's new spread is that it's suitable for her two-year-old son Bronx.

"The homes were two-story traditional style homes in a family neighborhood," says the source. "One of the houses was just up from the street from Coldwater Park where she and Pete like to take Bronx to play."

Another plus, adds the insider, "The homes were also very close to [sister] Jessica's house, which would be nice for her."

Guess What? Another Man Did Get Between Ashlee & Pete!

It seems like a lifetime ago, but try to remember when Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey were getting a divorce. There was all kinds of talk of Joe interfering with their marriage in those final days, urging Jess to cut her losses and pushing Nick out of the fold. Well, according to insiders, Joe's pulling the same thing with his youngest money-maker daughter, Ashlee Simpson.

Sources are saying that Joe is "doing nothing to encourage Ashlee to give the marriage another try," even for the sake of his grandson.

Supposedly, Joe doesn't have anything against Pete Wentz personally, but he does want to be the "only man in his daughters' lives and is happy that Ashlee has moved back into his home."

It looks like sources on both Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz's side are speaking up about the couple's shocking split.

First a source said Ashlee's "partying [and] being out of control" was one of their many issues that caused the split, then another source claimed she wanted out because of Pete's "erratic behavior", but now another source has come forward to support claims closer to the former.

An insider has revealed that the Fall Out Boy "started getting burnt out", because although Ashlee has been seen partying it up around town since they announced the split, it turns out she "has been out late partying for the past few months".

Apparently, she hangs with a crew of pro skateboarders in San Clemente, Calif., and returns home at sunrise!

The split MAY have actually been a trust issue as a source explains:
