Gaga killed it with her 4 "Fame" singles. That didn't prevent Britney from scoring a #1 with a random non-promoted track like "3." Britney's return didn't prevent Gaga from killing it with "The Fame Monster" era. Which didn't prevent Britney from killing it with "HIAM." Which didn't prevent Gaga from breaking records with her gayest song ever.

I don't think Britney can compete with GaGa unless she starts promoting again. An occasional performance here and there will not be adequate enough, she needs to promote at much more regular intervals. Britney can score #1s because she has a dedicated following, but her singles don't tend to sell as much overall as some of her rivals.
