He could possibly be a mix. He definitely looks both Italian and hispanic. Also, his mom looks hispanic and his dad doesn't.

actually yes that needs to become their priority this season unless they want to start getting accusations of becoming a sexist show

I don't know. The biggest winners and success stories have, thus far, been the girls. Kelly, Fantasia, Jennifer, Carrie, Jordin - I think we need a real male star to come from the show. It wouldn't be fair to only go for a girl just because they haven't had a female winner for a while, and honestly, the show usually promotes fair competition between the men and women in the beginning by making sure there are an equal number of each going into the finals.
Either way, I'd like to see Stefano do well. He's he can sing, play piano, he's gorgeous, and he doesn't seem to be full of himself. He definitely deserves to go far. Ultimately, any female winner who is aiming for pop or country, or even R&B, is going to end up being compared to past contestants or to current big names in the industry [which is full of women right now, making it harder for a talent competition contestant to stake out a place].
Past Seasons:
1. Female - Kelly Clarkson (finale was guy/girl)
2. Male - Ruben Studdard (finale was guy/guy)
3. Female - Fantasia (finale was girl/girl - a season brimming with female talent)
4. Female - Carrie Underwood (finale was guy/girl, but don't forget Vonzell made top 3)
5. Male - Taylor Hicks (finale was guy/girl)
6. Female - Jordin Sparks (finale was guy/girl)
7. Male - David Cook (finale was guy/guy)
8. Male - Kris Allen (finale was guy/guy - but Allison Iraheta was top 4 and got signed)
9. Male - Lee Dewyze (finale was guy/girl)
That's only 1 more man than woman as winners... and the majority of finale's have had female representation in one form or another. So I don't think there's any concern over Idol being sexist. let us not forget that Steven Tyler is the first male judge replacement, the past were Kara Dioguardi and Ellen, both independent women, and now we have J. Lo. Another independent woman. :]
