When she wasn't such a "serious", darker pop artist. She was still into costumes but not nearly as fantastical ones. Her music has taken a much darker direction since TFM, which I prefer.

Exactly. If I want completely brainless pop, I know where to go.
What I love so much about TFM era is that Gaga proved herself. During TF she always talked the talked, but she never really could back it up outside her live performances. Then Bad Romance came to destroy all and the pop scene has not been the same since.
Evidently, long platinum blonde hair and bangs, hairbow, huge sunglasses that cover half her face, singing Just Dance type songs, origami dresses etc etc etc
She was "serious" though - she was very pretentious and arrogant to the point of being rude in interviews where she wore lamps and elephants on her head. It just wasn't dark.

She's always been serious about her work. But that wasn't part of her image. Now she's known for being the hardest working popstar in the business.

Exactly. She takes huge risks each and every time. Some will cause an uproar and give her negative publicity, but it pays off in the long run. People know who she is and will remember her for a very long time.
