People also need to keep in mind that the melody will have a major effect on how the song is received by listeners.

As others have already pointed out, often times the most inspiring aspect of a song is the melody alone, no matter what the lyrics are touching on, if there even are lyrics. I'm counting on a tremendous and heartfelt melody to bring the song all together. Notice i said song, not poem. If this were a poem the criticism would obviously be warranted, but it's funny hearing all these complaints went people have yet to hear arguably the most important aspect of any song, IT'S SOUND

I always found "Papa Don't Preach" to be pretty cheesy.

But if she just made the song about the life of a gay person then people would complain that shes just catering to her gay fans and alienating all of her other fan groups. A lot of people were ticked yesterday when lyrics started leaking because it seemed that the song was just going to be about the LGBT community. I think a lot more people were comforted it in being more about universal acceptance + being Born This Way when having a disability, race, ethnicity, and class were also put into the song.

But the risk factor in this song - and it's the risk factor that organizations such as MTV have noted - is specifically mentioning the LGBT community. She did a good job of making the song inclusive (I thought at first, when we only had snippets, that it was only going to be a gay song and I was actually upset with her for that too).

It's such a paradox to me and I'm not sure what she should have done as an alternative. Maybe she should have scratched the concept altogether because it's such a cliche and generic one. I do know that I'm not happy at all with what she has done.

So I was born part Hispanic, but I don't need to hear a song to know that. I just don't get the message...what is it going to do for people?

Nobody NEEDS to hear the song to find out info, it's not a damn history book. It's an anthem about being proud of who you are and celebrating who everyone else is and being god damn unapologetic about it.

Some of the lyrics to songs in the Top 10 of iTunes verge on cheesy. If someone had typed up Grenade's lyrics before I heard them I would've had a mixed reaction.

I'm hoping the best for this.

The lyrics for Grenade are cheesy vocally and on paper. I hate that song for so many personal reasons haha

Yeah. JTWYA is worse. Grenade is the only song Iike by him (although I also like Nothin' On You - which isn't his).

Firework is another example, it definently has cheesy lyrics (from a hurricane, to a rainbow - boom boom boom, even brighter than the moon, moon, moon - like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow).

Nobody's saying you NEED this song to feel proud about your heritage. It's just a celebration song about diversity and being different.

Dunno what's so damn hard to understand about that.

Somehow Grenade works for me, but every time it's on I expect to hear "stick my head in an oven for you."
