Britney was unquestionably the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the '90s. Her career was high profile from the very beginning and she would have been that force even if she came out a year before or later, it wouldn't matter.

Christina was successful, even though she pretty much peaked with her debut, but Britney wasn't just a star - she was an international sex symbol and a phenomenon, the defining figure of American pop culture. Her innocence appealed to her female audience and the titillating and still unformed sexiness enticed so many male fans. In addition, she was a controversial media fixture and among female singers of the era, her celebrity power could not be rivaled.

Christina was, is and will always be incomparable in every way and far bellow Britney's level.

"Stripped" had its origins in the sound of primarily Britney Spears and a bit of Pink, who truly did break the mold. Releasing a Christmas album and a Spanish-language record of your debut ain't exactly breaking the mold: it is the mold. She seemed desperate to catch-up with Britney. The trashy "Dirrty" was one lame attempt at recreating the slinky sexiness of "I'm a Slave 4 U," and surprisingly it was a first single too. "Stripped" was only moderately successful due to Christina selling her piercing filled body and due to her suddenly liberated sexual belief.

I agreed with your post until the last part. The album was a success because most of the songs were heartfelt and very well-produced. Christina's vocals shined on a number of songs like "Walk Away" and "Soar." "Dirrty" was a huge flop in the U.S. so what makes you think it was her sex and piercings that sold the album?

She would have been as big as she is regardless of the time she appeared.

People have always put too much weight put upon Britney who is just a cute Louisiana girl who wanted to sing and entrain, and became famous and a cultural icon instead.

True, but even that album wouldn't have existed without P!nk's Misundastood. It's hard to picture a Christina Aguilera existence in pop music without her rivals' influence. None of her albums have a true identity of their own.

She looked hypersexual throughout the whole era (starting from the topless cover) and instead of coming off as rebellious, she proved that she was a natural-born skank. Britney's maturing was transitional, like a girl next door cutting loose at college and acting a bit recklessly, and it was like a journey. Christina just wanted to surpass Britney in the sex and confessions, breaking it down so they become the same thing.

She was given too much freedom and she didn't know what to do with it, but the sad thing was that she didn't really care.

And don't forget "Impossible" as a standout. (The rush-released) "Beautiful" was one of the biggest factors too, but anyone could have made a track like that. It was utterly similar to P!nk's work on "M!ssundaztood."

"Britney madness" happened because she revived the bubblegum teen-pop craze. Clearly, if Christina had released her album first, it would have been in a different genre. Britney would still carry on with the pop music and still spearheaded the revival of bubblegum pop. In that case, Christina wouldn't be in the shadows of Britney today. Britney would still be the superstar that she is today and Christina would probably be in a different light. Britney's popularity is instant and reached fever-pitched. Christina's never.

What you don't get here is that Christina was manufactured by her label to battle Britney and her popularity. Even What A Girl Wants was remixed into a pop record in the second pressing of her debut album at her behest. Had Britney never existed, she wouldn't be making a bubblegum pop album, and will more likely proceed to soulful-type direction.

Oh, I had no idea that Xtina's pop debut album was just made to compete with Brit's. I just thought Xtina was just doing a pop album just cause she wanted to do pop music. lol If I knew that I wouldn't had even made this poll.

I agree with Starstruck52 but I chose I have no idea because you never know how things would be different. People have opinions but no one would really no for sure.
