The numbers are going to dip even more, they only got as much as they did because it was the premiere. No Simon = no show. I would bet money that this turns out to be the last season.
Simon does not make the show, the contestants do. And why on Earth would they cancel the #1 show on tv?

People watch the show to see Simon ridicule the contestants. And I don't think it will be #1 for much longer. It's run its course. This show has noticeably been on a downward spiral since Paula left.
This show may not die down like I thought! The judges have a great chemistry, and throughout these first two episodes I rarely found myself missing or thinking about Simon Cowell. Randy avoided his cliche 'pitchy' critiques, and more people are getting accepted to Hollywood based on their talent. I'm guessing 80% of them are under 20, so they're really changing things up! It'll surprisingly be interesting, and I'm expecting a BIG winner.
Now to things people actually care about: where are my GIFS of that woman eating ****?
Only an idiot will say the #1 watched TV show in the US will get canceled.
It obviously has another 1-2 years on top. All shows have their peaks so no surprise there. Simon was NOT the show, the declining ratings during his last 2 seasons show that.
As bad as it may look, American Idol single-handedly beat the other four networks COMBINED. So haters? to the left!
The fact is, Idol ratings have not been improving since season 5; so I find it totally amusing that the press is trying to de-pimp the show by making it look like this is the first time the Idol machine reveals its middle age crisis to the public. No doubt that the show has peaked, but no one can deny it is still the most watched TV show on any network right now, in any kind of demographic (yo people, a 9.7 for 18-49 demo, what do you want?)
I've never watched a full season of AI here in the UK when it's been on, just odd episodes, but I've been getting into this new one with J.Lo. I prefer it.
