The gays needed a pop star that would actually cater to them during the current times, most gays don't really care for pop anyway, because a lot of artists are untalented. I used to hate pop music until Gaga came along, and she made pop interesting and noteworthy again.

i know she's a gay icon ect and i'm sure the way you feel is the same to others but it's just kinda annoying sometimes
"Firework" pisses me off because Katy sings about acceptance and has the song and video of "Ur So Gay", which I thought was offensive.
Gaga risked her career for the sake of just standing up for a group that was not mainstream and still ISN'T. Say what you want, but being gay is still not a mainstream concept. I kind of like it that way though.
I definitely wouldn't say that GaGa's fans are mostly gay. She might have a higher percentage than other artists, but music is music and you'll like it whether you're gay or straight. In a way gay is to GaGa as foreign children are to Brad and Angelina. It's just a cause that she stands for. She doesn't love one type of fan over another.
