The Best Album Covers Of 2010
Quote:
10. Katy Perry – Teenage Dream -
Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream has been honored with multiple Grammy noms, but her album cover art deserves some recognition, too. This cheeky, elegant and yes, dreamy Will Cotton-painted portrait of Perry resting atop a pink cloud in her birthday suit is not only gorgeous, but worthy of being hung on a wall. Plus: it smells like cotton candy! No other pop artist took their album art to those extremes this year.
9. Weezer – Hurley -
Do we even need to explain this one? Dude, we were just starting to miss Lost’s most beloved character, Hurley, when the show ended, until Weezer came along and brought Jorge Garcia’s smiling face back into our lives for their (appropriately titled) album, Hurley. The most ridiculous cover of the year, but it totally works.
8. Nicki Minaj – Pink Friday -
Why doesn’t Nicki Minaj have arms on the cover of her debut album, Pink Friday? The mystery — as well as Harajuku Barbie’s nonplussed expression, keep us staring at this kooky, unabashedly girly cover over and over.
7. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy -
With five covers to choose from, we bypassed the “censored” painting of a stripper Phoenix straddling the rapper for this George Condo original of King Yeezy being impaled by his own sword. It’s a beautiful, dark and funny image, and one that fits West’s inner struggle (and the theme to the album) to a T.
6. Christina Aguilera – Bionic - (Legend )
On Christina Aguilera highly anticipated Bionic — we were more than impressed with the cover art, featuring Xtina as a sexy, commanding fembot.
5. Bruno Mars – Doo-wops & Hooligans -
Bruno’s old school cover art for his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans is simple, but shows that what starts off with a slow walk down a long road can blast off to unbelievable heights. We’d say this metaphor captures Bruno’s career perfectly.
4. Kid Cudi – Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr Rager -
Kid Cudi’s downbeat portrait on the cover of his Man on The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager is melancholy, but rests among the stars. We especially like the added rips and tears, making it all seem aged and worn down. Moody, but magical.
3. Robyn – Body Talk (Parts 1, 2 and 3) -
Robyn put out three effervescent, unique covers to match the vivacity of each of her brilliant pop albums. It’s hard to single one out from the rest – though the visual of colorful sheets of paper flying out of the Swedish singer’s ear on Body Talk Pt. II may be our favorite – so we’re honoring all three as some of the best of the year.
2. Maroon 5 – Hands All Over -
We can’t keep our eyes off Maroon 5’s album cover for Hands All Over, featuring a woman in a state of undress – and a state of ecstasy. We’d tell you to give the band a hand for coming out with the funniest, creepiest and sexiest albm cover of the year, but they already have two extra ones.
1. Goldfrapp – Head First -
Goldfrapp’s stunning album cover for Head First is like staring at a sunset – you feel completely at rest while looking at it, and miss it once its gone. Thankfully, you can enjoy Alison Goldfrapp’s glorious visage on her cover art as long as you please.
