According to the public?
And do you really think songs like B.O.B by Outkast or Paper Planes by M.I.A are more iconic than BOMT?

What the hell is Beyoncé and Lady Gaga doing here?
Beyoncé already had a career with Destiny's Child, it's ridiculous to put her here. If you're going to count her, then you must count Gwen Stefani or Fergie, whose debut solo singles are most iconic by miles. You can count Shakira's first English single (Whenever, Wherever) which is more iconic too.
And Lady Gaga, if "Poker Face" would had been her debut single, ok, but "Just Dance" (being one of her best songs) isn't iconic, for her career, for pop music or for anything. "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry is most iconic than both of them together.

@ What You Waiting For & London Bridge being more iconic than CIL. In your dreams...

I'm sorry Nico but neither Gwen or Fergie's debut singles were iconic.

Basically. I don't even take ATRL polls seriously because the majority of the posters here only care for pure pop.

Rolling Stones did a "40 songs that changed the world" list (<< A list that actually pertains to IMPACT and not critical reception) and Baby one more time was on it, and guess what? THERE WAS NO BEYONCE
Which decade chart Crazy in love topped?

I voted for Crazy In Love based on the impact it had when it came out...Baby One More Time was one of many relatively generic pop songs (albeit the most popular, obviously) at the time...Britney's iconic status grew over a series of singles going into ...Oops I Did It Again.
Crazy In Love signalled the beginning of the Beyonce we all know now. She brought a new power and energy to female R&B/Pop, and not only spawned some successful wanna-bes (rihanna, ciara, alexandra burke etc etc), but also let all the other big girls in the game that they needed to keep stepping their game up. Crazy In Love was one of the big turning points in recent pop music...so it gets my vote : )

What Beyoncé fans don't know, is that she is really big in the US, but she doesn't have a big stan base in a lot of places (Spanish speakers countries for example) and artists like Gwen or Fergie are big worldwide, that makes them more iconic, and also their debut singles, which made Latin America's charts really well.
Also you didn't get my principal point. I was pointing at you can't compare her debut single with Britney, Christina, Madonna, or Mariah's one, because she already had a career, it's ridiculous, she had the best promo, the money, she already had fans.

I'm pretty sure Crazy In Love performed better on a WW scale than both What You Waiting For & London Bridge...
And her previous career ensured nothing (see: Kelly Rowland).

Why has no one mentioned Madonna's Holiday? I would imagine the true race to be between that and BOMT.
