No surprise really. They do this at most of the big music award shows. Katy's nomination for AOTY is ridiculous.

Here's what I don't understand: why do people think that awards shows owe anything to anybody except themselves? In concept, they're about rewarding the best in entertainment, but at the same time, they want ratings and attention, so they have to nominate things people care about. Nobody thought the five nominees for AOTY at the Grammys last year were the best albums of the year, but they were all well-reviewed and extremely successful. Obviously, this nomination for "Teenage Dream" is very puzzling and I'm remiss to explain it. There definitely could have been some shady business that happened. But do I think it points to some wide-scale payola scandal? Hell no. These huge marketing campaigns at the Oscars, Emmys, etc. are common knowledge (and even the subject of a lot of media scrutiny). I'm sure there was something similar going on here. I'll keep waiting on your big expose, Nicole, but I won't hold my breath.
