Yus!!! Battle of the titans! It's like the old times, those new girls better move over
So, the Avril vs. Britney saga started way back in 2002, and was made very public that both were polar opposites and Avril was the anti-britney and vice versa.
This is a tough one... I know a lot of people have really low expectations for Avril right now but their last albums sold almost the same amount of copies in the US, so I think it all depends on their promo and hit singles. I'm gonna go with my gut feeling and say Avril will come out on Top, IF her material is as good as her break has been long.
Britney will have HUGE first week numbers and fall off every possible chart after one month. If Avril manages to have the longevity, she can hope to outsell Britney after about 1 year since the album release. Also depends on the singles and promo each will do of course.
There was never an Avril VS. Britney saga, cause there was nothing to compare from day one.
Avril is an adolescent boy who became a sellout with her last album/era despite the fact that she swore that she'll never be like the other pop girls. And the same girl who wore those baggy, androgynous outfits and claimed it had represented her, now has pink highlights and dresses like she's fifteen.
And "Alice" was promoted as hell but still remained a massive flop while Britney's greatest hits single hit #1 and went on to sell over 3 million worldwide without any promo. "Radar" underperformed and still sold more than 1.3 milli.
This thread made me remember what a hypocrite Avril is. She trashed Britney in the past, but later admitted that she admires her and even partied with her.
The bitch had the guts to attack her back in 2007:

What happened to Britney is all down to who she is as a person. If you want a piece of this business you have to be able to deal with it. You can't complain about the pressures, the paparazzi, the madness. Because that is the job. I've always understood that's the deal.
But I guess Britney showed what kind of person she was later cause she partied with her despite it all:
Quote:
Tuesday night, September 19th, Britney Spears decided to blow off some steam by hitting up Hollywood hotspots with Avril Lavigne!!! Britney arrived at Winston's at 11:30 with some other new friends. She met up with Avril, cousin Alli Sims and Brandon Davis. After staying only about an hour, Britney and crew left and went to Hyde.
And later Avril had finally admitted how she feels about her:
Quote:
Avril Lavigne has surprised herself by becoming an admirer of Britney Spears, after realizing how difficult it is to sing and dance at the same time. Lavigne has stunned fans by dancing in the video for her new single "Girlfriend" and has only just realized why Spears often mimed on stage. She says: “I’ve had to work with a choreographer but I’m actually quite athletic and I have good rhythm so it comes natural to me. It made me appreciate people like Britney Spears, as I realize how much work goes into that stuff. The whole thing where you sing and dance is so hard, and I understand her now.”
She was right on one thing during the hate phase though:

None of what's happened to Britney will ever happen to me.

"Circus" without almost any promo sold pretty much like "The Best Damn Thing" in one of the worst years in music for album sales. And Britney will get all the hype in March without even moving her ass, despite Avril's massive promo as always. Imagine if Britney actually bothers to do something.

"Circus" was selling good for more than a year, for example, it sold 41K worldwide in its 44th week.
Duca, Avril never became a sell-out. And TBDT sold more than Blackout, and both were released same year, in fact Avril doubled Brit's numbers. I like Britney but come on, no need to start bashing Avril. It's obvious you're threatened by the fact that Avril's long comeback is gonna overshine Britney's. Girlfriend was a bigger smash than anything Britney brought out on Blackout. So don't be spreading the lies by saying Avril is no comeptition.
And 'Alice' had one promo performance dude, she didnt promote it past that performance on Jay Leno. So no it had no promotion.
Britney will never have a performance like this:
Fact is, Avril more than likely at the end of the day sell more albums than Britney will.
But yeah, continue your pathetic posts. This is supposed to be a mature thread, and a tribute to both great artists, Avril and Britney!
"Circus" was selling good for more than a year, for example, it sold 41K worldwide in its 44th week.
Circus sold more than quarter of its total sales in its first week, if I'm correct. and probably over half in its first month. Longevity isn't exactly Britney's strong side.

Even her fans agree that she became a sellout. You can't compare Britney's completely unpromoted album with "The Best Damn Thing". And "The Best Damn Thing" sold a little over 1.5 milli more than "Blackout". The singles from "Blackout" have sold more than the singles from "The Best Damn Thing" though.

It had the Abbey Dawn clothing line promo too and was featured in a $1 billion grossing movie.

I see no facts there, I only see reported ignorance.

Is this why Circus spent 9 weeks in Billboard 200 top ten albums? Yeah it fell off quickly because they moved on to the tour after announcing "Amy" as the 3rd single, but circumstances are different now. This is the first time she'll release outside the 4th quarter in 11 years. Seriously thinking Avril will sell more is ridiculous.

Are you really comparing TBDT to Blackout? Blackout during Britney's worst moment has still managed to sell just short of 1 million copies. Avril only old 600k more with a huge hit single.
And don't be silly. You're the only person, and apparently fanoftalent (no surprise), who would even pin Avril against Britney, then try to make her superior. No one's threatened. Avril won't outshine. No one has been excited for Avril's album since she announced it 20 years ago. Britney made one tiny announcement about a new album in March, and the internet is taken by storm. While Avril deals with the turmoil of her album forcing her to release commercial music because the **** she's recording isn't going to sell.
We'll see in March, but really no need to compare.

Actually 1/5 which is normal.

"Circus" charted for 52 weeks in France, 44 in the US and 32 in Ireland, and had longevity elsewhere too.
Jive only wanted a platinum album. They stopped the very little promo they had done after the album release and moved on to the tour.
We still don't know, how will they perform when the 1st single drops.
But,if they were both sucessful with their singles,I think Avril will outsell Brit WW.

Exactly, it is just normal. It confirms that longevity isn't her strong side (I never said it was her weak side either).
Her sales are skewed to the period of the release of the album. Sales are sales. It has its advantages...having huge initial sales confirms that she has a strong very loyal fanbase. Its just that she can't always spark the interest in general public with her material.

If she had promoted more, she would have sold at least 7 milli. But considering the massive amount of promo P!nk (random example) had done, don't Britney's sales make P!nk's seem rather pathetic? "Funhouse" sold 34K in its 44th week, "Circus" sold 41K.
