I agree, and that attitude is precisely why we haven't had an iconic male pop star in a long time. To be successful, you basically have to copy Michael Jackson because that's what people seem to expect. But in the end, you're still just a copy. Nobody calls dance moves Usher-style or JT-style - they're still MJ-style. Major male pop stars have not been cultivated because they simply don't have a distinct style (either because they don't want to create one or because their labels won't let them).
I'm partial to Adam Lambert because while he's obviously influenced by MJ somewhat (most pop stars are), he's more reminiscent of Freddie Mercury and David Bowie than anyone else. I do agree that there's something missing, but hopefully he'll find whatever that thing is by his next album.
