Grammy-wining producer/songwriter Red One isn’t about to rest on his laurels just because he produced some of Lady Gaga’s biggest hits. There’s too much work to be done. The Moroccan-born maestro is busy working on the new Jennifer Lopez record in Los Angeles and has big plans for 2011—including breaking the buzzy singer Mohombi, debuting a record from Porcelain (the next Gaga?) and rolling out a new clothing line for men, with its first retail outlet to debut Beverly Hills. 0diggsdigg
“I was in Sweden and I went to the best store I’ve ever been to,” he explained yesterday inside a recording studio near Hollywood, regarding his new fashion venture. “They had all these combinations that are sporty but classy. It gives you the edge, but it’s still classy. I just fell in love with the clothes and I suggested to the two young incredible designers to partner together.”
Details are still being worked out regarding the line, but the producer now has the team (and the money) to see his vision through. “We’re going to open a store in Beverly Hills,” he added. But the in-demand songsmith is most excited when talking about music. “Musically, I’m trying to combine all the elements that makes her who she is,” he said of his work with Lopez, as he sat behind a mixing board. “We connected, and it was easy to work together.” The two have finished work on about 8 songs so far.
“She’s in another headspace,” he continued. “She’s very positive and content. She knows what she wants to do.” Lopez isn’t the only one who is focused on creating a new sound. Red One’s own artists, signed to his new label venture via Universal, are also readying for a busy 2011, including Porcelain.
“She’s going to excite people,” One said of the Los Angeles-based brunette whose first single will be leaked to clubs in the three weeks or so. “Porcelain is a true rock star—it’s no act. You can never go wrong if you do a rock feel with bass [for the clubs],” he said of the sound he and the budding singer have crafted together. If the fantastic tracks I heard yesterday are any indication, Porcelain could be headed for stardom.
The duo recorded many of the tunes from her forthcoming debut in Madrid earlier this year, which One says colored the new work. “I feel inspired to do music on the road,” said the producer who wrote “Bad Romance” with Gaga on a tour bus. “When you go out on the streets and go out to eat or whatever you do, you get so many influences, you’re like a sonic magnet.”
But before he introduces Porcelain to the public, he will focus on Mohombi, the Swedish-Congolese dance-pop singer who is finding success in Europe with his single “Bumpy Ride,” but has yet to break out in America. This week in Los Angeles, Mohombi filmed a big-budget video with Akon, for his next single “Dirty Situation,” that may well crack the U.S. code.
“I’m really excited about this,” said Mohombi, regarding the new video. “America is a big country and I have to be here more to promote myself,” he said from LAX before catching another flight to Europe. For Red One, both Mohombi and Porcelain represent two sides of the same coin, despite the fact that they are miles apart musically. “You have to combine dance elements with the matching artist,” he said. And what does he think of the hundreds of producers now trying to emulate his chart-topping production sound that has nearly spawned a new synth-heavy format of music? “I’m flattered,” he laughed. “It just shows me that it did something that affected people around the world and that means everything to me.”
