Are There Any *Music* Stans Here?
Hey, ATRL!
I've been lucky enough to be a part of this forum for years now. I quite frequently see the term "stan" used a lot. It appears to me that if you stan for one artist, you must hate another one? Why? Is there anyone that likes a song based on the song and not the artist? Pop music is an amalgamation of genres. That's why I love pop music. Pop music allows me to love music from Britney, Rihanna, Beyonce, Gaga, Taylor Swift, and yes Justins Bieber and Timberlake, just to name a few. Why should it matter if an artist wrote their own music? Granted, it might indicate the different levels of talent that one artist may have over another, but does it change the fact that the song was recorded by that artist? It's still a good song. Some songs grab you with the lyrics, others grab you with the beats and music. Both are important, otherwise you'd have a bunch of instrumental cuts or spoken word "songs." With all of the prejudice that's out there right now, music should be a safehaven. We really should like or dislike a song based on the song, and not the artist. We could really miss a lot of good music that way. So, are there any *music* stans out there?

I don't really stan for anyone either. I love almost everyone. GaGa is kind of my favorite, but my obsession for her is nothing compared to GaGa stans here.

I have favorite artists, too. My favorite female artist is Mariah. I don't dislike Christina Aguilera just because she's competition. I love Christina's music, too. Competition is a good thing. It causes artists to step up their game, which in my opinion causes music to get better. My favorite male artist is Michael Jackson. Sure, he had some personal issues, but that is separate from his professional life. You shouldn't judge his music because of his personal life...unless he actually did those things and started singing about how good it was...

I have my favorite artists for sure, but I generally like music as long as it is good. I am very willing to listen to almost every genre of music, actually.

Agree except for the bolded... oftentimes, a record is much more meaningful if it's self-written and/or self-produced.... only the writer knows exactly what the lyrics (and even composition) were meant to mean, and no amount of explanation could give someone else that same knowledge. This doesn't apply to songs that were meaningless in the first place.

I don't stan for anyone either. I used to have a favorite, but I can't say that I do anymore because I have too much music to choose from. What I dislike are the people who stan for one particular person, won't hear any type of criticism against them, and trash other singers. It's just immature.
edit: But you asked for music stans, and 28,000 songs on my iPod later, I can say yes. I'm obsessed with getting as much music as I possibly can.

I stan for music too.
Sure, I do stan for Miley, Selena, and others. But as a whole, music is music. I love what I love.
