Diwali (also known as Deepavali) is an Indian festival, celebrated by the Indian community of the world. It is popularly referred to as the
festival of lights, as it is seen as a triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
Today, Indians around the world will rise to freshly cleaned homes and will put on new clothes. They will celebrate with friends, sharing food and sweetmeats (candy) and enjoy each other's company. As evening approaches, they will begin to light lamps along the doorways and window sills of their homes, as "guiding lights" for the Goddess of Prosperity.
