Nelly Furtado talks about her plans for a new album & the release of her Greatest Hits
As Nelly Furtado prepares to survey the first decade of her recording career with the Nov. 15 release of "The Best of Nelly Furtado," t he Canadian songstress reports that she's "just over sort of halfway done" with her next studio album, tentatively titled "Lifestyle" and due out in 2011.
"I'm a little bit picky, so I'm kind of going through all kinds of material," Furtado tells Billboard.com. "There's new material I'm writing and old material that's... very good and hasn't been re-approached. For me it's about sharing moments of my songs with fans, so whatever are the best moments will end up on the album, I guess."
Furtado predicts the set will be "eclectic" and influenced by the wide-ranging approach of her double-platinum 2000 debut, "Whoa, Nelly!," as well as the vocal work she did on her 2009 Spanish album "Mi Plan." "I think that from singing the Spanish album I've learned a new confidence as a vocalist," Furtado explains. "And I think there's a little bit more of an alternative influence on this new album, kind of how my first album was definitely inspired and partially influenced by 'alternative' music. I've been listening to a lot of new music, everything from Janelle Monae, the xx, Florence and the Machine. It's definitely inspired by a lot of the new music that's coming out right now."
Furtado has been recording primarily with Salaam Remi, who co-produced "Night is Young," the first single and one of three new tracks on "The Best of...," as well as a "super poppy version" of "Crocodile Rock" with Elton John, for the soundtrack to the 2011 animated film "Gnomeo and Juliet." She's also "experimented" with reggae with Stupid Genius and has worked with Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos.
The album will also be Furtado's first to feature only English songs, she says. "I've never done that before," she says. "I'm interested in hearing what that sounds like."
The album is on hold right now, however, as Furtado focuses on "The Best of..." The disc will be released in a single-disc standard edition as well as a deluxe package that includes two CDs and a DVD; in addition to "Night is Young" it also includes the unreleased songs "Stars" and "Girlfriend in the City," all of which were originally slated for the next album.
"I think it's a fun thing to celebrate," says Furtado, who will appear on the Latin Grammy Awards on Nov. 11 in Las Vegas and hopes to do a few shows to promote "The Best of..." "I'm proud of the fact that ('Whoa, Nelly!') came out a full 10 years ago and you can still put it on and it sounds like something that's on the radio now; at the time we were just kind of making music we felt like listening to, which is what I've always done since."

Concert in Abu Dhabi, new Lifestyle track "The Seeker" & Dolly Parton cover
Nelly is preparing for her concert in Abu Dhabi at the end of November, she has also let slip mention of a new track “The Seeker”… and a Dolly Parton cover.
Nelly will be performing for the first time in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 26-27th November 2010. In a recent interview she talked about a new track on her upcoming 4th English album “Lifestyle” and she mentioned inspiration for a new track:
Furtado has two projects on her plate for next year, which she is hoping to promote during her visit to the Emirates. Her new album, Lifestyle – the fourth English album she has produced – will be out in 2011 and she is also releasing a compilation album called The Best Of Nelly Furtado later this month.
She says the Lifestyle album is still a work in progress. She was in the studio this week – recording a Dolly Parton cover for an independent movie being produced in Montreal called The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mother – when inspiration for a new track struck.
“The song I’m singing is called The Seeker and it is a gospel-influenced track. As I was singing it, a whole new idea for a track for the new album came to me and I had to sit down and write all the lyrics on my BlackBerry. That kind of thing happens all the time,” she said.
The interview with “The National” can be read in FULL here.

"Onde Estás"!?
But it seems pretentious indeed to say "This is the first english album when there mostly have been 1-2 spanish songs on the albums anyway.

Spanish none. "Onde Estas?" is completely in portuguese and "I Will Make U Cry" and "Scared Of You" mix portuguese and english.
And it's not the first english album. IT IS THE FIRST COMPLETELY ENGLISH ALBUM. I don't see pretentious, it's just a clue what we're gonna expect for this album.

I would say that’s a working title right now. I haven’t totally decided on that title, Lifestyle. My goal is to put out two albums in two years, actually, like a Lifestyle Part 1 and Part 2. I think this new album is going to be all English. It’ll be my first only-English album.

Another interview:
Quote:
Where do you plan on taking your next studio album, "Lifestyle"?
I'm going back to the eclectic feel of "Whoa, Nelly!" So far tracks I've recorded encompass pop, hip-hop, dance, reggae and alternative-pop.
That's who I am and that's how I live my life, and that's sort of been the way I culturally live my life in terms of what I surround myself with - music or art or even people - so I think that's why I'm calling it "Lifestyle." I just want a collection of songs that people can connect with, like always, but at the same time I think image-wise I'm going to be different again (laughs). If anything, it'll be a throwback to who I was when I first came out.
Tell me about working with Elton John on a new version of "Crocodile Rock."
Yeah, he has a new production coming out - it's an animated movie called "Gnomeo and Juliet," and it's a cartoon for kids that comes out on Valentine's Day. So yeah, they approached me to do the closing song and it's "Crocodile Rock." And he's on it - like him and I are on the track together! It's so exciting.
So you didn't actually do studio time together?
No - we missed each other by, like, a day. But we have sung together before. Hey, here's a perfect example: Ten years ago, Elton and I sang "Legend" together.
We've come full circle.
Yeah! Because he was a fan of my first album and he used to talk about it all the time, and he's really good that way with new music. He's really on top of it.
The people you work with are all over the map: Timbaland, Josh Groban and James Morrison, for instance. And then Keith Urban shows up on the deluxe edition of "The Best of Nelly Furtado" for "In God's Hands."
I have many fantasies of who I want to be as a singer, so I was having a country fantasy with that song, and "In God's Hands" always felt like a country record to me.
The reason why I do so many darn duets is because I've always wanted to be in a band. I mean, I'm a solo artist, but I've always been jealous of people in bands because I think, "How fun would that be?"
How did you get the nickname Nelstar?
Nelstar was the first band I had. It was a trip-hop group - when I first moved to Toronto when I was 17, this producer and me had this trip-hop duo and we did moody urban trip-hop songs and I performed them around town. It's a name that's kind of stuck with me, so I decided to name my label Nelstar.
We have an artist right now named Dylan Murray - he's excellent, he's Canadian. Actually, he performed with me at the PFLAG event - oh, I know what we performed! A song from "Lifestyle": a duet called "Be Okay." It's a really, really pretty song. Another duet!
You made a remark to Genre magazine in 2005 that everyone is a little gay - remember that?
(Laughs) Oh yes! I was quoted and misquoted in many publications. It was pretty funny. That went really far. I was quoted as saying that everybody was gay, which is not really what I meant. I think sexuality is ... a very alive thing. It's very human. And I think we all embody the masculine and feminine - and so does the world. Right now we're entering into a feminine time and everybody is embracing their feminine energy, which is really nice.
Maybe you weren't totally off with that comment, though. Now it seems everyone is a little gay with all these celebrities jumping on the bi bandwagon.
I say everything first if you notice! Just go back: I say, do and wear everything first, if you really look at it. And that's a quote! (Laughs)
Always a step ahead?
But I'm too far ahead! I'm never on trend (laughs).
