While English is certainly not an easy language to learn, the fact that so many people from non-English speaking countries have "perfected" the language means that its not that hard of a language either, even factoring in the fact that non-native English speakers had a high motivation to learn the language, as it is a #1 international language.

Russian for example is much harder with its complex grammatical structure. And Japanese, Chinese and Arabic are all very complicated languages to master due to very difficult alphabets.

Nope, I've talked with him in Dutch. He doesn't use punctuation though.
And Dutch isn't hard, Piepje3, it's similar to German and English, and if you just pay attention to the little details you'll get it under control.

I honestly think it all depends on people's definition of "mastering" a language. To me, English is easier to learn for survival; that is, to be able to function in society. However, I wouldn't say it's easy to master, because there are always those pesky things that seem almost impossible to learn (e.g., I still don't get the difference between 'in' and 'on' right ALL the time, but that doesn't mean that I can't function in American society as a non-native speaker of English...).

Personally, I like to make the analogy of languages to appliances and other types tech gadgets: Some languages are just more 'user-friendly.' But just because you can easily learn how to use them properly, it doesn't mean that it's easy to learn how to do EVERYTHING with them or to learn every single little trick there is to them.

It was easy for me to learn English because I liked it since I was 4, at those times we learned the colors or clothes by singing songs.

I think my interest on looking for the meaning of songs lyrics or what the people are saying without looking the subtitles in a movie helped me a lot. To learn a language, it is very important to be very interested on it. Of course that's not an obligation, but it makes things easier
