The “purple day” or “spirit day” will honor the memory of those like Tyler who have ended their lives due to intolerance. The Facebook page declares that October 20, 2010 has been declared Spirit Day and supporters are asked to wear purple. So far, 41,000 people have responded on Facebook to say they will be participating. Domestic Violence Awareness Month is underway and groups are defining the day as supporting healthy, violence-free relationships as well.
Organizers have said that purple is the color of honor and spirituality. Since purple is made by mixing two primary colors, it may be a good analogy for the movement, which celebrates diversity and asks for equal respect and safety for all. And to this end Canadian teen wears purple to honor Tyler Clementi and other gay suicides.
