Ayumi Hamasaki Dethrones Seiko Matsuda, Smashes Record For Most Consecutive #1 Singles
Ayumi Hamasaki's latest maxi single "L" seized the number-one spot on the Oricon weekly chart, becoming her 25th consecutive number-one single since "Free & Easy" in 2002.
Hamasaki now holds the record for the most #1 singles by a female artist, in both the solo and group categories.
Last week, Hamasaki tied with singer Matsuda Seiko, who reigned over the Oricon chart with 24 singles in a row from 1980 to 1988, with the single "Crossroad". With "L"'s success, however, she was able to take the title from Matsuda, who held the record for 22 years.
Ayu commented, "I'm surprised and honored at the same time. It's all thanks to the fans who have supported each and every single that I kept putting my heart in."
Congrats Ayumi!!!
