But in recent years, he's been beaten at his own game as designers such as Marchesa and Elie Saab have dressed bold-faced names on the red carpet.

I don't really like this implication that Armani can't complete with these frou frou newbies, though unfortunately it is the case that a lot of young starlets are drawn to these new era designers.
Armani's gowns reek of glamour
and opulence without relying on the
sort of frilly gimmicks I've seen from Marchesa a few too many times (and when Armani does go for frilly glamour, I feel as though it's usually done in a more regal/sophisticated way. See: Cate Blanchett at Cannes in 2008).
I'm seeing less of the constant need to over-embellish gowns from Elie Saab, which makes me happy, but
again, even when Armani is
creating something with a lot of
embellishment (Anne Hathaway's
2009 Oscar gown with all the
dazzling paillettes, his pieces for
Gaga) there's a sleekness despite all the glitz. I just don't feel many other designers could accomplish the same thing.
The bottom-line, Armani not only keeps up with the whippersnapper designers, he outdoes them.
