Right before Rihanna’s new single “Only Girl (In the World)” was confirmed for release, rumors were floating around that another song titled “Cheers” would in fact be her first single. The song was produced by Miami-based urban duo The Runners, but it’s creation also involved the input of a much more surprising collaborator — Avril Lavigne.
Along with songwriters Stacey Barthe (Heidi Montag, Britney, Katy), Graham Edwards (Britney, Hilary) and Andrew Harr (Girlicious, Rick Ross), pop-rock princess Avril is listed as one of the song’s co-writers.
While the song is intended for Rihanna, it raises further questions about the direction of Avril’s upcoming album. When first announced, the album was billed as an “acoustic-based record” produced and written entirely by Avril, her ex-husband Deryck Whibly, guitarist Evan Taubenfeld and the multi-talented Butch Walker, but it’s since been pushed back multiple times and appears to be transforming into more of an urban-pop project. First it was revealed that Avril had hit the studio with Eminem/B.o.B. hitmaker Alex Da Kid, then The Neptunes confirmed that they had worked with the Complicated singer, and now she’s writing songs with The Runners.
