What are you talking about? Namie had a surge in popularity in 2008 and is currently the queen b of Japan (though Kana Nishino is coming for her wig now).
Her latest album 'PAST<FUTURE' topped the Oricon half-year chart this year.

I am comparing her popularity to the popularity she had before Utada and Ayumi came into the scene. She was the undisputed Queen of Japan. Now, obviously she is still huge but not as much. Despite the fact that it did well on the charts, it is only #4 on the Yearly Chart.

She should be higher. She's been dubbed as Asia's Songbird for ages. She's like the Mariah Carey of Asia.
