Dereoon on the left / E-label on the right
According to online reports, Beyonce Giselle Knowles
once again finds herself being accused of stealing. This time it is the Iceland design house E-label that is levying the claim. Unlike previous claims against the singer, however, it not music the pop diva is accused of stealing, but rather the design for a pair of leggings.
The leggings in question were designed by Asgrimur Mar Fridriksson back in 2008 and feature studded and metal spikes on the front. Beyonce was recently seen sporting a similarly designed pair of leggings in several fall 2010 campaign ads for her own Dereon clothing line.
Heba Hallgrimsdottir, co-owner of E-lable, says Knowles bought several pairs of their leggings last year and that the Dereon design leggings are “practically just a copy/paste” of their design.
When asked whether E-label would seek compensation from Beyonce and her Dereon line, Heba said their design was not copyrighted and that the company was weighing their options. Heba added that even without a copyright he believes the widespread attention Knowles garnered when she purchased their leggings would be enough to prove the singer knew of their design and then willingly appropriated it for her own company.
