It really depends on what one looks for in a friendship. Some people like being able to grow up with their friends, but I tend to notice people change over the years so it can either be good or bad for the friendship, depending on the different people. I know some people take a while to build trust and others who end up opening up to anyone who will listen. I tend to trust immediately until you give me a reason to not trust you, and then I don't care how long I've known you but I find it hard to actually remain close to you.
I personally value friendships more on how well our interests and personalities match nowadays. I still have friends from elementary school who I am close to but that only happened by chance because we had years in between where we both grew up differently and somehow landed in the same-ish place during late high school. We can also still hang out, which I have learned to be a crucial thing for maintaining friendships. If you can't really see them much, and they aren't the type to go online and chat, it's hard.
