Right but noise from your surroundings doesn't change the measurable volume coming from your iPod. Your ear isn't meant to be exposed to that level of volume so close to the eardrum, whether or not it's in public. The volume shouldn't go above 60% anywhere - car, train, gym, airplane, etc

i dont blast my music unless there is outside nosie interferences becaue my ears cant take all that.. so im not ones of those teens

But what about clubs? The noise there could be worse in my opinion, it happened more than 5 times that my ears hurt the next morning.

Yeah clubs and concerts also hurt your ears. That's why [some] people get ringing in their ears. As long as you're not frequently in a club or at a concert it's not that big of a deal, because it can definitely add up.

I listen to my ipod on the subway every day on my way to work and back home. If I put it on that volume, the noise of the train would drown out the ipod.

When I have normal headphones on, my iPod is cranked all the way up when I'm riding in a car or on the bus. When I have the ear buds on, my iPod is only about 2/3 of the way up.

Of course when there isn't any background noise, I don't have it up that loud. Also, I love to jam my music really loud when I'm at home, but I have amazing hearing! And sight, too. Which shocked me since both of my parents have glasses and I sit in front of a computer for long periods of time.

I have my volume full (on my Nokia phone) but it's not really loud, my ear phone isn't really providing loud sound.

I never play music with 50% and up volume. I just can't handle it.

I like it loud but I don't do it with my iPod. I do it with my stereo.

For my iPod, I think it's like 40%.
