Lady Gaga debuted during the digital, YouTube, and social networking era.
Digital: She has the #1 best-selling female single of all time on iTunes. And the #1 best-selling album. Not to mention the album with the most singles sales.
YouTube: She has the most views of anyone on YouTube.
Social Networking: She is days away from being the most followed person on Twitter and is the most befriended living person on Facebook.

You do realize that most of these accomplishments are pivoted to the fact that social networking, youtube hits and digital records are growing by the YEAR right??
Lady Gaga's "success" resides in a time where those things (facebook, youtube, twitter, iTunes..etc) are bigger than ANY year before it, so how is it impressive to break those records of those fields when they weren't as accessible and popular as 365 DAYS ago?
in 2003 a single only had to sell 1.5k to top the "hot digital tracks" (Beyonce's crazy in love), while now x50 of this amount won't even suffice to enter the top 5.
some of those records are ALREADY broken, a lot of her records didn't even last SIX MONTHS (baby >> bad romance. Tik tok radio adds >> Bad romance), which tells you how FRAIL her accomplishments are.
And CMON! 4 pop radio songs? If that's impressive then what are Mariah Carey's 5 number ones of a debut album?

"records are made to be broken."
^ yea I know, I'm not talking about that.
I'm talking about the FACT that 99.9999% of her accomplishments are related to fields that are INCREASING EXPONENTIALLY by the YEAR. So technically, she is given a major advantage above EVERY other star in 2009, 2008, 2007, etc, etc, etc
Got it booboo?
"panties she has gotten in a twist"
Well around her fat ass they sure as hell have to get twisted

Why? Were her contemporaries frozen in ice during this period? Did they not release music?

They did release music in a time where DIGITAL records were less popular, and so was facebook, twitter, youtube, ETC.
BTW, haus_of_nicole, you're so nice on here! I mean at least comparing to IMDB where you tell people to kill themselves
*teehee*

You can say those digital records are all ********, but then why it was Gaga that broke them, and not any other?

I used to tell people here to kill themselves here, but that got me banned like 8 times. You should see me in the NHB section though.
You mentioned 2007-2009.
Britney, Katy, Rihanna, Ke$ha and countless others released music.

Like who :S?
Britney's peak was 10 years ago (I love her but I'm not stupid)
Katy's "it" era was 2 years ago, same with Rihanna, Who then?
To me, impressive would be Madonna being the top selling singles artist in the 80's, she did that without having an advantage like gaga has now (physical singles were EQUALLY available and accessible to everyone that ENTIRE decade)
@Nicole: You're freakin hilarious I'll be sure to stalk you on here!

I love it when people downplay another's success. *sarcasm*
So if she has an advantage and it's really the internet/youtube/digital era that accounts for her success, why haven't other artists of this era made it big? Miley Cyrus (not Hannah Montana), Christina Aguilera's Bionic?
BTW that "panties on her fat ass" comment is grounds for warning points from the mods - I highly recommend reading the forum rules.

Think how no artist nowadays can sell ALBUMS like artists used to do in the 80's-90's, at the same time they have the advantage in technological-related fields

I didn't say it ACCOUNTS for her success, I said it's a BIG PART of her success, not that it's solely responsible for it.
There is no "if", it is a fact that digital records are expanding by the year (same with social networking) and that gave advantage to subsequent artists (like gaga) than the ones that peaked before them

Lol, I didn't say no one should flop just because the digital era is expanding, I said they have the ADVANTAGE

So what is stopping them from having massive success like Gaga if it is a big part of her success?
Yes, it plays a role in her success, I agree, but I think her massive success is MOSTLY due to her catchy music and perhaps her personality.
Perhaps you can enlighten us regarding the 80s/90s era in terms of how artists sold albums compared to today and whether you meant that these days, artists have a "handicap" with technology.
