This week 10 years ago (August 12th, 2000), Lucky, the ultimate bittersweet teenage symphony and one of the signature songs by the queen of pop, Britney Spears, was released as the second single from her second, diamond album, "Oops!...I Did It Again".
The song about a girl who seems to have it all: the fame, the wealth, the beauty, but is truly lonely on the inside, is one of Britney's most critically acclaimed songs and one of her most successful singles, peaking at #2 for 6 weeks on the worldwide top 40 chart and selling over 1.2 million copies ending up as the 7th best-selling single by a female artist of 2000.
This heart-breaking tale of life at the top of the teen pop trees was often referred to as to one of Britney's finest moments and Britney's own Where Did It All Go Wrong? in which her falsetto shines. It was always questioned were the heavy lyrics If there's nothing missing in my life/Then why do these tears come at night? autobiographical, but Britney has never denied nor confirmed the rumors. The music video is considered one of Britney's best work as well and features her playing a double role for the first time: she is the narrator of a play showing the life of a very famous Hollywood actress, named Lucky, also played by Britney, who goes through life always happy and smiling, despite never showing true happiness.
This could easily be my favorite Britney song. I'm not a big fan of hers, but even back when she first released this single (and I first saw it on MTV Latin America) I recognized how good it actually was
