Depends but in either case a good beat is essential. Many times if I think the beat is awesome then I'll probably like the song regardless of what I lyrics are about, but I always prefer that a song have good lyrics, even if it's about absolute nonsense (ie Britney's "Mannequin"; awesome beat and good lyrics about nothing at all). However if I'm not feeling the lyrics at all then I won't be able to enjoy the song even if the beat is great. On the flip side, If a song has good lyrics but the beat is not doing it then I also won't enjoy the song. For ballads, the lyrics and melody/music are like equally important. In BOTH cases, I ALWAYS prefer that the song is recorded by someone who can actually sing because I LOVE that. Some songs can bypass this preference because the recording artist's lack of good vocals is irrelevant factor to the song (again, ie Britney's "Mannequin").
Tik Tok is a great example of a song with a great beat that I absolutely cannot and will not listen to because everything else about it just sucks to me. The song is retarded.
Melody. If you sang the lyrics with no tune it would be blech. i could sing any catchy pop song tune replacing all the words with "blah" and ull get it stuck in ur head. its the melody! lyrics dont matter, no one knows what they really mean unless it's, "but the party don't stop" some bs like that.

The lyrics can be completely horrible, but if it's catchy and sounds good, I'll still listen to it. However, if it were vise versa, incredible lyrics, but terrible melody, I couldn't listen to it at all.
