My theory:
Label intervened. They had Avril's record and realized that it wasn't the right thing to release. Christina Aguilera's disaster of a fourth album probably didn't help Avril's position either. They seem to be playing things a bit safe with Max, but I'm excited for the Alex stuff. Avril needs something fresh in her sound to get attention back, and new producers are the right way of going about things.
I hope that she cuts the Deryck, Evan AND Butch material. We've heard what Avril does with those producers on two records already (except Deryck). I'm glad that she's changing her angle, and she'll undoubtedly have success with this era.
