most of the stuff we hear on mainstream radio has no substance though. they're just catchy.

That's the thing that is bothering me. It's like all the pointeless, generic, recycled songs like "Tik Tok", "California Gurls", "Break Your Heart" etc. are going to #1 these days.
It makes me wonder if the music industry is just going through a phase or if we've reached a permanent low. Because nobody wants to hear meaningful music anymore.
Popular music shouldn't be meaningful, I doubt anyone even pays attention to the lyrics of the songs they hear on the radio.

Honestly if you're into meaningful music then don't measure the success of a song on its chart position. It's pointless. Pop is meant to be fun and often disposable.
Maybe meaningful is the wrong choice of word. I just wish radio had music that was unique and substantial again. Everything on the radio these days just sounds so formulaic and recycled like I've already heard it before.
