She's not flawlessly beautiful, but the majority of high fashion models aren't. Some of them would be "ugly" by societies standards, but the industry tends to favour those who are beautiful in an unconventional way. It's rare that truly beautiful (perfect) models do well in the fashion industry, they tend to bore designers, they're not all that inspiring. With the exception of Kate Moss, all of the 90's Supermodels were
curvy women (Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson, Linda Evangelista Naomi Campbell etc), they weren't stick thin. She changed that. Kate brought in the "heroin chic" look, known as such because the models looked like they were on drugs - it was an emaciated/androgynous look. The majority of models today would still adhere to this aesthetic of beauty, androgyny has been the dominant look for both male and female models during the past decade. When she first rose to prominence there was a perception that she, and henceforth the look that she represented - was going to be a fad. Her staying power has been remarkable, she is without a doubt the most iconic model of all time.
The majority of the younger models that are given the title of
Supermodel by the media today are Victoria's Secret models, and they are almost entirely irrelevant as fashion models. All their work is commercial, and that is not held in the same regard by industry insiders. Gisele Bündchen is the only one of their most recent models to have rightfully earned the title.
