I think its appalling performance is the precise reason for the enthusiastic response - it flopped so hard that it's fun to watch it rebound. It's the ultimate underdog, the Rocky of the iTunes chart. You can't help but root.
.....
I hope that as Easy A's release gets closer, Poker Face keeps climbing

This is more than likely a brief surge. I can't see it rising continuously, it should sell enough to finally chart but that's not exactly much on an accomplishment. I don't care for the song myself, it deserved to flop IMO. I can understand that people would want to root for the underdog, but how can a song form Rihanna be classified as such? There's so many more talented artists who have never had a big hit and I don't see them getting any support here. People always talk about the same artists/ songs. This thread needs more variety.

I know, but most people here only have an account to support (read: boast about) their fave. I myself am guilty of that.
Maybe if you start discussing more artists, others will follow suit.
The problem however is that it tends to be the same artists/songs that dominate the iTunes charts.

I guess that's true, other than Lady GaGa most people here would never discuss the artists that I like because they are not well known in the US. There's more variety in the UK generally, the US seems to go through phases where certain genres/ trends dominate. There's never really any sense of balance.
I honestly find the US iTunes chart rather boring right now, I hope things pick up once the summer is over. I always think that this is a dull time for new releases.

Yeah I mean, if you're not a fan of Eminem or Katy Perry, the current charts are going to be boring.

Well, people (myself included) are getting excited just because it might chart on the Hot 100. The fact that Def Jam were being genuinely ridiculous to even release this awful song caused it to be RiRi's only song released to ever not chart. Its not really people wanting to see it get high on the chart, rather it is people rooting for her to chart at all.

I like Katy Perry, in many ways she has the complete package and is a perfect popstar. I would not classify her as one of my favourite artists, I listen to her music but not that often. I detest Eminem.
My current favourite is Marina and The Diamonds. She's coming for Lily Allen's throne.

Luckily for me, they are two of my favorites. I am so glad that Katy decided to start her era while GaGa is away. That way I can stan hard for Katy without having my GaGa-dedication get in my way.

If the song does not chart then it can easily be brushed aside and they can concoct some excuse for it, they could disregard it as a single. If it charts at a low position on the chart it's not exactly something to be happy about, it will be a permanent blotch in her singles trajectory.

 re. Eminem. How, why?!
I like Katy a lot, but as hard as I try, I find it difficult to stan hardcore for a girl who is 26 and who has a pink, scented album named Teenage Dream. In movies, books, music, etc. I'm generally not a huge fan of cutesy girly girls. Still want her to smash, she is better than most pop girls.

Hopefully future videos/photos from Katy this era can restore some of the edginess that she had in her debut era. Because I have the same kinda problem too.

I have no reason to like Eminem. I don't like his songs, and I don't like his personality.
I like her but I don't love her, I get what you mean. I think she's very commercial, but she is more talented than most other American popstars. Her songs are generic but she has a winning formula, you can't help but like them. I've always been disappointed that Lily Allen never managed to break America, she's far more original than the people who are thriving in the US market. It's such a shame.

Yeah, with people like Lily Allen, I've heard of them, and that's pretty much it.
I think Eminem's songs and star power are electrifying.

She's incredibly popular in the UK, both commercially and with critics. She recently won 3 Ivor Novello awards for songwriting, they are incredibly prestigious. She also won the BRIT award for British Female this year. If you ever get a chance, you should listen to her.

Her sound just doesn't fit on airwaves here in the States, unfortunately.
As for Katy, she needs to stop thinking about short-term success with the next album and venture away from the same run-of-the-mill producers everyone else is using. It's the only way she'll earn respect and a significant stanbase.

She is incredibly talented, and if she would have gotten a major effort to launch her career here in the US with "It's Not Me, It's You", she would have achieve success I think.
