The Althingi parliament voted 49 to zero today to legalize same-sex marriage in Iceland.

In 2009, Iceland became the first country with an openly gay head of state when Social Democrat Johanna Sigurdardottir, was elected prime minister. Gunnar Helgi Kristinsson, a political scientist at the University of Iceland noted that Sigurdardottir’s sexuality was not a large focus domestically in Iceland. He explained that international media paid it more attention.

He added, “The attitude in Iceland is fairly pragmatic. [Gay marriage] has not been a big issue in national politics — it’s not been controversial.”

With this vote, Iceland becomes the ninth nation in the world to fully legalize same-sex marriage.

Iceland is many steps ahead of us.

They are so far ahead of us and so progressive that I simply assumed that gay marriage was already legal there. I'm surprised it took them this long.

I'm being a little off-topic, but how many U.S. states have made gay marriage legal?

This is good, it's wonderful. But since I was introduced to the gay world that the amount of people I believed to be gay changed completely. I'm afraid that with these rights given 80% of the world's population will assume they are gay and heterosexual men will disappear for me I know I'm overreacting but it really was a shock when I began to know the alternative world there is around us and that no one realises it exists, at least I didnt. I have absolutely nothing against it, it simply scares me that it has such a big population.

I believe 6 but I could be wrong.

What? We're still a minority... like 10%. And heterosexual men don't "disappear," if you find that you're noticing less straight men then it just means they were never straight in the first place.

Really? 10? What a relief. For the past few months I discovered more and more people that were gay and I didnt even suspect and that freaked me out a little bit.
