Honestly, how many times did you hear the name Christina Aguilera in 2007, 2008 and 2009? Yeah, that's my point. Britney vanished from the Music Industry, but she didn't vanish from the Media.

Christina was actually touring during 2007 (and also performed again in early 2008), having released videos to 'Oh Mother' and 'Save Me From Myself' - an AMAZING song, I must say - in late 2007. Then, in late 2008, she released her GH collection, having performed at the VMAs in September. But I'll give you 2009, even if she was already working on 'Bionic'.
That said, tell me: how come does all of that qualifies as "vanished"? :-/

Sade, after almost TEN years on hiatus, sold 502,000 copies on its first week only in the US, and the first single peaked @ #52.
In february, even more impressive.

I didn't mean it literally, If she appeared for a month then "vanished" for the rest of the year, that doesn't really count. Christina wasn't relevant in 2007-2009, period. She was forgotten. It's not like it's her fault - Every single artists out there will suffer the same if the camera flashes will darken on them.
That's why they released GH albums, which didn't really help. She shouldn't rested that much - That's why in the Music Industry, you cannot rest, there's too much pressure to handle.

Yet again, you ignored my post.
Popular Culture /=/ High Culture.
You cannot compare Sade and Christina. High Cultural fans tend to be more loyal than the Pop fans, because the Pop fans change favorite every now and then (Living example - Rihannafan in ATRL. He used to LOVE Rihanna, now he loves Ke$ha.)
Same goes for Alicia Keys and these country artist and cultural known artists. It's very hard to be a popstar nowdays, harder than you think.

exactly pop fans are not loyal she waited too long and they moved on to gaga katy, kesha, rihanna etc.
oh well she still has a core fanbase that will continue to support her all she needs is a smah song and she will be right back on top.
I love the album and its not the first time one of my faves flopped hard lol.

Sorry for being a prune, but what the hell is "high culture?"
Is that referred to as artists who aren't mainstream?

Yes and no. I mean, obviously, people like Jack Johnson and Sade must be mainstream artists if they can reach the highest point of the Billboard Top 200. But "high culture" is the culture of the elite, such as the intelligentsia. It's contrasted with the low culture or popular culture of, variously, the less well-educated. Pop music like Britney or Christina is viewed as "illiterate" music by high culture. The masses are weak and fickle people who feed on the hot artist of the month.

So those annoying people you see on Fox who constantly bash Britney or Gaga are members of the high culture, right?

I used to be a complete elitist, but right now, I'm stuck in the middle. I love pop music, but I find 90% of it to be illiterate.

Man, everyone except the Christina stans saw this major flop status coming a million miles away. I called it when I said the album would struggle to sell 100k in its first week - and that was months ago!

That's ********. The pop fans are as loyal as rock fans (ok maybe a little bit less), you can say the Xtina fans are now fans of Gaga, and I can say that the Evanescence fans are now fans of Paramore. It happens with all the genres.
Look at Madonna and Michael Jackson, they have their loyal army of fans... just as U2 and The Rolling Stones.
Maybe the ones that aren't loyal are the Xtina fans.

the problem is that she tries to do all this genres and the product is mediocre. Back to basics retro sound was done much better by Amy winehouse. now Bionic....electro sound is done much better by gaga, keisha.....

I'd say that Madonna fans are more loyal across Europe than the U.S., but Britney fans are pretty dedicated after all these years and all the personal struggles. And you can't deny that MJ's fanbase preserved through every last trial he went through.

i agree though ..pop fans are very fickle. madonna has kept her fans cos she has always been outrageous...always in the public eye.
the competition is very high. you can't just come up with a mediocre product like Bionic, when there are better alternatives for pop music,.
pop fans are young people who just want a hot track to dance at the club.

cant believe im agreeing with you but THIS.
Shakira,Kelly, Leona, and Mariah can barely sell 1 million albums coming off big albums. while Alicia and Mary J are selling well and they haven't got a pop hit this era.
You just named legends Tommy its different. how come all the people that bought Circus didn't buy Blackout when most people say Blackout is so much better? or the Rihanna fans who bought GGGB she has had 3 hits this era and her album sales are still down.

I know what you guys mean, and I think it's true... BUT that happens with almost every music genre, not just pop. The majority of those people never really were fans of certain artist, they're just fans of billboard/mtv/etc music.
