And I'm sure she didn't want "Rated R" to be dark, only an idiot would want to get back at that thing that happened, anyone normal would want to forget that and move on. 
Her label probably thought that the dark image would sell and it's obviously not.  The only real hit she got this era was "Rude Boy" and it was a lucky hit and it was a hit probably only cause it's the closest thing to "Good Girl Gone Bad" sound she had on the album.

Honestly, I think Rihanna does know who she is as a musician. Her first two albums were driven by the label. They thought she shud stick to island music nd it wud be a big hit but it didn't happen that way. They realized that when "s.o.s" came out nd showed that pop music is what she shud be doing. GGGB was their answer. But RATED R is her best album to date. Every song has a story behind it, a meaning, a mood. From "wait your turn", to "stupid in love", to "cold case love". That was RIHANNAS defining moment with that album. That is her most personal work. So she knows what she wants. Hopefully she can make her next album even more personal.
