It differs for labels. Some will break contract if an artist isn't generating revenue, others will let the contract finish and drop them. Mostly the 1st one happens. If it's a big artist flopping with albums, but generating other profit as singles, tours, etc. then they have better chance sticking around.
Keri would not get dropped, she sold a respectable amount of albums as a debut artist, more than many other R&B females in 2008/2009. Also Knock You Down kept the label (Arista?) happy.
I think what BeamMeUp said is very true, plus the fact that the artist simply has to turn a profit for the label. I would think ANY profit would be enough.
Keri did not flop, in today's industry it is pretty good to sell well over 500,000K copies of your debut album. Is not like we're in 2000. Plus Knock You Down was a BIG hit and her other singles did okay WW.

You're only allowed one flop album - under Gold certification/Platinum if you're hot ****. Then, every album after that must at least go Gold/Platinum. But, if you have a really successful era - Top 5 year-end/matched success of your best album (for the lessor gorls) - then the cycle resets and you're allowed another flop. Most of the industry uses this formula.
well i think the label would probably measure it between profits versus production cost or if some potential on the artist to go big in the industry in the near future even if their initial albums flopped or didn't sold that much, they'll probably decide on that... who knows though...
Flo Rida, Ciara, Shakira? I don't think I'll need to add Xtina to this list.
Which is sad because I like Ride and was rooting for Ciara to have a successful comeback but no one seems to be feeling the song like that. Hopefully something big will happen with the album though.

Ride is a good song and needs to do better. I hope she makes a strong comeback and has some huge mainstream hits on her hands this time around.

As someone pointed out, not all artists are albums artists but do well in digital downloads (Flo Rida, Rihanna, Soulja Boy).
They're be willing to hang on to people who have other talents such as songwriting (Keri, if Taylor Swift were to ever flop, Ester Dean....).
Or if the artists are well established (Usher, Britney Spears, Mariah....)
