FIREWORKS
Is there a better way to kick off an album of this magnitude than with fireworks? The intro features the venerable Alicia Keys on the black and whites with a slow build-up that allows Drake to ease into his signature laconic flow. This is no “Empire State of Mind,” but as a song that explores his meteoric rise to fame, it satisfies like Snickers. A. Keys keeps it simple with the hook, allowing the Canadian MC to also drop some R&B on the refrain. Drake is fully aware of the full-fledged mania attached to his first LP with the line: “Lookin’ down from the top and it’s crowded below/My fifteen minutes started an hour ago.”
KARAOKE
For those who wonder how Drake will balance rapping and singing, the second track serves as a sonic road map to the album. “Karaoke” is dedicated to Drake’s first love and it's another laid-back track with a Sade-type vibe. As the title might suggest, Aubrey gets his sang on throughout, dropping lines about how he was only trying to get ahead while his wifey was too busy keeping secrets. Guess she wasn't the best he ever had.
UNFORGETTABLE FEAT. YOUNG JEEZY
People have been wondering if the Aaliyah sample is legit and we can confirm that it is. Apparently, in order to clear it, Aaliyah's label told Drake he had to be willing to give away 100% of the publishing from the song. When Aaliyah’s mother heard that Drake was wiling to do it, she said that it was unnecessary and personally told the record label to clear the sample. Young Jeezy offers up a completely different sound on this track and the jury is still out on whether it works, but any song dedicated to the lovely, late Ms. Aaliyah Haughton is fine with us.
