Back in 1989, MTV gave out its first Video Music Award for Best Dance Video, and the honor went to Paula Abdul for "Straight Up." That clip definitely had some fancy moves but we think the appearance from then-boyfriend Arsenio Hall really pushed it over the edge. (Kidding ... sorta.)
Needless to say, dancing in music videos has come a long way since then. Allow us to bestow upon you a list of our Top 5 favorite videos featuring killer-dance sequences.
1) Michael Jackson's "Thriller": Paula, you're forever our girl but we've gotta give credit where credit is due: We wouldn't dare mention the words "music video dance sequence" without giving well-deserved props to The King of Pop for basically inventing the genre -- especially in his groundbreaking "Thriller" clip. The moves in this vid are copied to this day, whether it's part of an homage on "America's Best Dance Crew" or a weird flashback in the Jennifer Garner rom-com "13 Going On 30." (No offense to Mark Ruffalo, though, but the latter is something we never need to see again.)t
2.) Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)": If you search for "Single Ladies dance" on YouTube, you'll find almost 50,000 results. The more famous copycats include Joe Jonas and the cast from "Glee." Still, our favorite has to be this guy. There are no words.
3.) OK Go's "Here It Goes Again": One look at this indie-rock quartet and you probably wouldn't think, "Hey, here are four well-dressed, skinny dudes. I'm sure they can bust a move!" However, after seeing their breakthrough video for "Here It Goes Again," that's exactly what you should be thinking. We can only imagine how many kids saw the clip and turned to their parents, saying, "Mom and dad, someday I want to start a band and dance on treadmills, too." Ah, the circle of life
4.) Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation 1814": Back in the day, this Janet Jackson video was the sh*t. Frankly, we think it still is. The video might be more than 20 years old, but those dance moves are timeless. Hell, so is that baseball hat with the silver buckle, but we digress ...
5.) Hanson's "Thinkin' Bout Somethin'": We couldn't stop smiling -- and tapping our feet, for that matter -- throughout this entire "Blues Brothers"-inspired Hanson video. We're totally impressed that the band was able to syncopate the movements of a small army for their over-the-top choreographed dance number and highlight the incredible tambourine playing by one Weird Al Yankovic.

Rhythm Nation is the only one that matters and is the most difficult choreography of the 5. No one on youtube could imitate it if they tried.
It's definitely the most difficult, although Thriller matters too.
lol @ Single Ladies being above RN. MTV will regret that in 5 years when it goes down in history next to the Macarena. No shade towards Beyonce intended.
