It was "of the time." Society's perception of what is and isn't effeminate have changed over the course of 30 years and it just so happens that what is seen as a more feminine look aligns with that of 80s fashion for men. It was an extremely homophobic decade, men (specifically straight ones) didn't walk around in clothing that they saw as "effeminate."
Besides, half of those photos are from video shoots, which didn't display general 80s fashion. (Just as almost no one dressed in hot pink/neon green Madonna imitation clothing during the 80s). Music video fashion wasn't everyday fashion. To make such an assumption would be saying that everyone dressed like Lady GaGa in 2011 (which they didn't).
The other half of the photos display clothing that's actually back in style now, however, or in the 00s when 80s nostalgia was at its peak, much like the 90s are now.
