I've only worked a little with the Dutch, Hungarian and Catalan books (poor Czech). German is the one major Western European language I have paid dust to so I couldn't tell ya, but I know my college uses this textbook called Kontakte. I've heard only bad stuff about it though

But for Catalan, there are very few books online. The Teach Yourself books for Catalan are pretty good. The old one is very grammar-based and rather challenging, the new one is more dialogue-based. I like both but for serious learning I'd go with the old one. I found them on Amazon for like 6 dollars each used but in great conditions

Also for Catalan, I like watching TV3 Catalunya videos online and YouTube. I have neglected my Catalan lately due to school though I think Imma focus on Latin for a while since that's the language I am actually taking a course on. I'll be doing Latin III next semester

But I have been using English more than Malay since I was 10

And 4 courses of:

Arabic
Hindi
Mandarin
Hebrew

I feel like even though Americans do suck at languages, millennials are more open to them. There are lots of Spanish double majors here, many of them in biology planning to go to med school which is great because we have a booming Spanish-speaking population.

I'm currently trying to learn French vocabulary since I lack a lot of it, but I was thinking on trying to understand the basics of another language, maybe German or Arabic. German because it sounds so messy and Arabic because of the new letters and all, idk yet.

Cool a language thread Continuing chugging along learning Korean & Japanese again this year, its been tough but I'm getting there.

I actually just finished the Catalan Tree in duolingo and am about to start translating catalan music and watching catalan language tv. Im also gonna have a notebook where ill try to write catalan in order to see what my weak points are in grammar and to improve. Honestly the hardest thing in a language is vocabulary since there are soooo many words

I'm focused on being fluent in Spanish by the end of the year. I read very well, writing is improving. But I need more work on my speaking to make it flow more naturally.

Not really in my experience many just use it because it looks good on paper, or because they have to. As soon as they stop attending class they drop that new language all together if they aren't integrated in that community.

English is my native language. My second language is Spanish. I started learning it when I was 5, but I've made great improvements in the last 3-4 years. I'm fluent in it now. I also speak Portuguese which I started learning this year. I'm very advanced in it due to me knowing Spanish. I'm starting French in the spring at college.

Being trilingual has made my life so much better. 3x the memes, 3x the music, 3x the tv shows and movies. The whole we are different people in different language thing is real. I'm sooo much more dramatic in Spanish because novelas were my main teachers of Spanish. But I love speaking different languages. As I'm writing this La Rosa de Guadalupe is playing and a couple of years ago, I wouldn't be able to understand it when paying attention, but now I'm passively listening to it and I can understand it perfectly.

Omg, I am so jealous of you I interrupted Catalan cause my Latin class got super hard. The subjunctive in Latin is a big fat mess. Poor people who think it is hard in French when in Latin the subjunctive is on STEROIDS

You will love French. Albeit not a phonetic language, you can easily tell the sound patterns. For example "au(x)" and "ô" have the same sound, "ois" sounds like "wa," and the last letter of every word is very frequently not pronounced.
