At ~25k a year, that's not true if he lives for ~50 years (1.2 million, already lower than the death penalty trial cost). With the trial, inevitable appeals process, then death row housing until his eventual death (which is also more expensive), it's simply not cheaper than if they sought life imprisonment, got through the trial quickly, then stuck him in a cell until he died.
