Many of thee cities in the US lead in major things. Most notably in finance, tech and science. It's obvious they would be highly notable. Even Boston which contains some of the worlds most elite universities like Harvard and MIT would gain huge importance because of scientific output.
You also have the realize many of these European countries are centralized to one main city. While the US is decentralized to many cities. While San Francisco leads in tech, NYC leads in finance.

Europe is hardly centralised.
Just an example, Geneva? Well, maybe hosting the most international institutions in the world including UN and all its political influence, being one of the Worlds financial capitals, its cultural events, museums and historical sites, even its tech, innovation and science (being home of CERN ffs) isnt enough to even make it into the top 25, and not make the top 35 in the '08-'16 index, being overtaken by cities like Boston, Melbourne, Atlanta or Toronto?
