I don't know why people think that Jennifer Lawrence or Chris Pratt can carry a film. They are not talented or interesting actors; they are only adequate actors, at best. Jennifer Lawrence didn't carry "The Hunger Games" franchise, the wildly-popular books did. Jennifer Lawrence didn't carry the already-established "X-Men" franchise starting with the rebooted "X-Men: First Class" trilogy, Michael Fassbender did with his critically-praised performance as Erik Lensherr/Magneto, and to a lesser extent, James McAvoy helped. Chris Pratt didn't carry "Guardians of the Galaxy," Marvel-Disney did. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two actors that can't carry films outside of franchises, which wouldn't be a terrible thing if they both weren't so untalented. And, yes, Jennifer Lawrence has an Oscar, but so does Marisa Tomei. Lawrence only has an Oscar because she was the it-girl of that year. Come to think of it, Jennifer Lawrence is our generation's Marisa Tomei.
In conclusion, I don't think it's a surprise that "Passengers" flopped.
