Is Ed kind of mirroring Taylor's career so far?
I mean, think about it. Ed is known as the guy who writes his own songs and sings with a guitar in his shows. This used to be what Taylor's image was all about until Red
Then, "+" and "Taylor Swift" were kind of similar success-wise. They're both albums with bigger sales than their actual popularity at the time would indicate, that also managed to get some hits in the process.
Then, "X" and "Fearless" managed to increase their popularity, managing to turn them into mainstream acts and major touring forces, even getting them started in the whole "stadium-status" thing after selling out their arena dates with ease.
And now, with the whole hype and the snippets we got from, i kinda believe Ed is skipping his "Speak Now" era. Judging by the snippets, a lot of people are predicting it will be a double album, one being more "classic Ed" and the other being more mainstream sounding. This would be kind of what Taylor tried to do with Red.
But on the other hand, i kind of believe the success of "÷" could mirror "1989" more than "Red". So this could be his "Red" in terms of mixing genres, and his "1989" in terms of success, if the era goes well. Especially because i believe he will be playing way more stadiums this time around.
What do you think?

Sis, this was an interesting theory and then you got to:

What i actually wanted to do there was say that it could be somewhat of a more successful "Red", and that he was skipping his equivalent to "Speak Now"!

No lol
+ feels more popular than TS (debut) though. The latter was very local.
I can see the Fearless/x comparison.

The x era is much bigger than the 1989 era (Taylor's biggest era). TOL is bigger than any song from 1989, and x had 7 hit singles (ISF, Sing, Don't, TOL, Bloodstream, Photograph & LIAOM) whereas 1989 had only 5. x was far more global and had better longevity too

1 huge era does not make him bigger than Taylor
Taylor is way bigger, she's one of the biggest solo touring acts right now
If Ed can have six successful eras and become a huge touring force, than he will be bigger than Taylor

Obviously Taylor has a bigger overall career because she has 6 albums, but Ed is bigger as of now.

1989 outsold X, The 1989 Tour outgrossed The X Tour, and i'm pretty sure 1989 sold about the same amount of singles
Plus, streaming:
2.532B on Ed's Youtube channel (including Lay It All On Me) + 3.508B on Spotify = 6.040B
5.951B on Taylor's Youtube channel + 72M on Spotify = 6.023B

I see what you're saying.. but if anything "Shape Of You" is more like his "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" imo.
Something like:
Fearless = + (Plus)
Speak Now = x (Mutiply)
RED = ÷ (Division)

Yeah I agree. Listening to the new singles this was my first thought actually. I figured he was going to be cjanging up his style for this new album/era. His last album reminded me of Red a bit with Don't and Sing which were different than othernsongs on the album and different from his first. This new album will be his 1989 music change direction wise and probably commercial wise.
