Well, first off: I don't think anybody should be using the "-er" version of the word, and I'm pretty sure must of us can agree on that.
But it's the "-a" version that gets a lot of people up in arms. The term was made casual among some African-Americans to take the power out of the word. However, there is still a huge backlash when other people use it, so should the word be ended altogether?
I don't casually refer to white people as rednecks, hicks, etc or call people of other races outside their name. So I don't see why it's so hard for them.
Yes, I've seriously never heard of an oppressed group taking a word used to belittle their ancestors and "making it their own" It's such an ugly evil word, I even cut it out of my vocabulary recently.
