What are the actual similarities between 1989 and Emotion?
Sound wise, to be precise. And this is not about their quality or what I or you think about them in terms of enjoyment or success, be either critical or comercially.
Although both are claimed to have been influenced by the eighties pop scene, both of them share a very different use of instrumentation, genres and sounds in general with the exception of two songs [i.g "I Really Like You" / "Your Type - "New Romantics" / "Style".]
EMOTION shows hints of alternative R&B, funk and UK Bass and showcases a more synth-heavy, lush production than the other while 1989's melodies are sometimes reminiscent from Taylor's work with country music [i.g "How You Get the Girl"] and approaches to a more minimalistic, light nature. There is actually nothing much similar about them besides the "love" theme which one could argue that is not Taylor's main focus through the record. Her lyrics could be interpreted as a an "answer" to the general public about her own image ["Shake It Off"] to giving relationship advices to someone. Yeah, EMOTION itself sometimes goes to this same area ["L.A Hallucinations"] but the way how the given situations are handled are completly different.
1989 may have been influeced by the eightes itself, however, there are not many names that popped into my mind that share similarities sonically with it other than Debbie Gibson's debut album [The entire album for that matter]. Once again, the record seems to pay more of a ode to the so called "minimalistic" sound that was trending at time, combining with elements from the said influences, pandering even to early noughties pop.
EMOTION's was said to be directly influeced by "old school Cyndi, Madonna and Prince" [i.g tracks "Run Away With Me", "Emotion" and "Boy Problems".] while it doesn't goes straight up eighties, it keeps that nostalgia vibe from the said influences, keeping more of a in-between with with the past and the present.
Conclusion is one seems to be more "eightes" just in name and said concept than the other, differents aesthetics in general and personalities as a whole. Neither are 'overproduced" by definition, but one is less "heavy" than the other in those terms. If anything, there is a better argument of EMOTION's older sister, Kiss being more of a proper comparasion, but due to being too much "sugary" in comparasion to 1989's diet coke sound, it still sounds like a reach.
Do you agree?
