The entire MDNA era, esp GMAYL. Even the SB + Nicki/MIA couldn't make that decent.

Well.... yeah.
You can promote all you want but if people just aren't responding and interested, then you'll still flop.

Glory - Britney Spears.
One of the most promoted records of the year stalling at 280k WW. A major pop girl struggling to do 300k globally is tragic in itself, with or without promotion. And her stans were notorious for the "no promo" excuses for previous eras but as soon as she promoted, the opposite happened.

811K WW without a hit in 10 weeks of 2016. My example works a little better!

Stone Cold and Million Reasons are the best receipts for this statement being correct

I forgot about Rebel Heart. Grammys and BRITs performances (incl. highly publicised falling over) and it still failed to chart in America. Good example.

Joanne won't score a Top 10, won't touch MDNA's album sales, or even scrape half of MDNA's tour gross. Doesn't look like a better example to me!

Beyoncé promoted the hell out of 4 and it kinda flopped but don't get it twisted because Run The World and Love On Top are iconic and the album still sold 3.2 million copies during the peak of the EDM era.

Joanne's on lock to do 1M pure sales WW and it's her least promoted era to date, but alright sweetie. Stay using excuses for the fact Joanne's proving y'all wrong and not needing hits, airplay or streaming push to sell.

MDNA managed 2M WW as a 2012 release. Joanne will likely do 1.3-1.5M as a 2016 release, that's far more impressive. RH is about to be outsold by it and it was released in 2014.
Jury's out on what 2017 will do for its singles. But I agree, Madge certainly did well on her MDNA tour!

I definitely agree with you! Perfect example is Madonna's last two eras sadly. But she remains a good touring force, at least.

they way you ran here didn't allow you to think even the performances she did in different countries of Living for Love was a more suitable example for this thread.
The only televised performance of the MDNA era was the SB and, similar to Beyoncé 's Formation, it made GMAYL a certficied gold top 10 hit in USA and top 1 hit in Canada, the only countries SB is relevant.
Not mentioning: era with 2M seller album, $305M grossing tour, lead single top 10 in 25 countries, Golden Globe win, 1 top earnings in Forbes, highest watched SB halftime show back then, etc.

Are we really comparing MDNA, early 2012, to Joanne, late 2016?

Mediatraffic has been inflating Joanne's sales for weeks now, it has barely crossed 700K. Not a very big success considering the heavy promo, Q4 release and holiday discounts.

which levels out the fact that Madonna debuted in 1983 and Gaga in 2008.
