There was a Reddit thread about people who knew celebs from before they were famous and a Redditer shared how his mother went to schoop and was freindly with Madonna. She went from a cheerleader her first 2 years to cutting her hair and not shaving her legs and armpits by her senior year. I've also read stories by her old college roommate. Madonna was quite the character and her personna wasn't a surprise to those who knew her growing up.

I have found this little tidbit

My aunt went to Adams Highschool and said that one of her teachers knew Madonna and said she "Never shaved her armpits or her legs, and still made the cheer squad. She always did flips and cartwheels going down the hall."

Madonna went to Rochester Adams high school in Michigan and my dad went to a neighboring high school (Eisenhower) at the same time. One day he and a friend decided to ditch school and go over to Rochester Adams because apparently they had the "hottest girls."
As they were walking in the front door, they were stopped by the principal. My dad and his friend convinced the principal they were on Eisenhower's student council and had an appointment to tour the building, simply to see how Rochester Adams "ran things." Apparently, they were convincing or the principal was really dumb because he personally showed them around the school.
As they were walking through the hallways, they passed a group of cheerleaders. In the '70s, cheerleaders sewed their names onto the front of their uniforms. As my dad walked by them, he looked at one of them and upon reading her sweater said, "You could be my Madonna ANY day!"
No way to know if it was her for sure, but I don't think there were too many Madonna's on the cheerleading squad back in the mid '70s. So needless to say, my dad claims he hit on Madonna and he "swears" she winked back at him.
